Penguin pair bonds are often long-standing. Some species, like the Gentoo, stay together throughout the year, wheras others return to the same breeding area at the end of winter, and meet their mates there. If their mate does not arrive in time they will choose another. Changes in partners occur about 13% to 18% of the time.
